There are fraud detection procedures implemented by the credit card processors to limit the exposure of a merchant to losses.

1) AVS - Address Verification - The credit card terminal or software will prompt the merchant to input the first few numbers of the billing address of the purchasing credit card, and the zip code. There will be a response letting the merchant know if there is a match.

2) CVV2 - The merchant will also be prompted to input the 3 digit CVV2 number on the back of the credit card. This verifies that the customer has the card in their possession.
